Houthis Warn of Attack Against Israeli Presence in Somaliland

(MENAFN) Houthi insurgents in Yemen have announced that any Israeli involvement in the self-proclaimed state of Somaliland will be treated as a valid military objective.

This declaration was issued shortly after Israel became the first nation to formally acknowledge the independence of the Somali breakaway territory.

On Sunday, the group’s leader Abdulmalik al-Houthi asserted that Israel’s recognition amounts to “aggression against Somalia and Yemen, and a threat to the security of the region.” He emphasized that the movement will “consider any Israeli presence in Somaliland a military target for our armed forces.”

The Houthis, who have suspended assaults on Israel since a ceasefire in Gaza last October, portrayed their warning as a gesture of solidarity. At the same time, they accused Israel of attempting to carry out “hostile activities.”

This development came after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar signed a declaration on Friday acknowledging Somaliland as an independent nation, making West Jerusalem the first administration to do so officially.

Somaliland, situated along the southern edge of the Gulf of Aden in East Africa, proclaimed its separation from Somalia in 1991 but has remained diplomatically isolated. Netanyahu explained that the recognition was made “in the spirit” of the Abraham Accords and extended an invitation to Somaliland’s president for an official visit.
